Rare specThe options you don't usually see

Dynamic Handling Package

$3,450 option

An uncommon box to tick on an X7. It adds two systems that make a 5,600 lb SUV drive like something much smaller:

  • Active Comfort Drive with Road Preview (Executive Drive Pro): active anti-roll bars keep the body flat in corners, and the front camera reads the road ahead to get the suspension ready for bumps before you hit them.
  • Integral Active Steering: the rear wheels steer too. At low speed they turn opposite the fronts for a tighter turning circle in parking lots; at highway speed they turn with the fronts for stability.

Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound

$3,400 option

BMW's top audio system, chosen in place of the standard Harman Kardon setup. Built with British hi-fi maker Bowers & Wilkins:

  • 20 speakers powered by roughly 1,500 watts
  • Diamond-dome tweeters, the same material B&W uses in its high-end home speakers
  • A pricey upgrade, so it's rarely seen on X7s

    Fluid lab results

At the first fluid change we sent samples of the factory fluid to Blackstone Laboratories to see what was going on inside.

    Front differential

    Water
    None
    Insolubles
0.6% (at limit, due for change)
    Viscosity
    4.74 cSt @ 100°C

Elevated metals and silicon, which Blackstone attributes to break-in wear and factory assembly sealant from the original fill. They expect it to improve with each change. Fluid replaced with BMW GL-5.

    Transfer case

    0.1%
    Viscosity
    5.22 cSt @ 100°C

Iron a little high, most likely break-in plus a long first interval. Other wear metals were within normal ranges for a BMW transfer case. Follow-up sample planned at the next change.

    The engineering

Before any metal was cut, the manufacturer ran the design through finite-element analysis (FEA): a computer simulation of each test from the Japanese VIA wheel standard. The colors show stress: blue is barely loaded, red is close to the limit. All three tests passed.
